KS2 & KS3 Nurture
Introduction
The Heights have two nurture groups offering consistent teaching and support from staff who deliver learning following Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 National Curriculum.
The nurture Provision is proud to be an accredited member of the nurture group network. Achieving the Quality Mark Award acknowledges high standards and an excellent nurturing curriculum are present within the provision, and that the nurture provision is of the highest quality in its approach to meeting the needs of all its students.
Our aim is to support pupils who are having difficulty managing mainstream education, but with additional nurture and support, can return to and succeed in, their mainstream school.
The Heights nurture provision offers a short term focused intervention, which addresses barriers to learning. The provision has the benefit of small class sizes, enabling intense input from the staff.
The nurture provision provides a safe, predictable, and supportive environment with embedded routines to enable children to enjoy their learning. At the heart of the nurture provision is a focus on wellbeing and relationships and a drive to support the growth of children, following the six key principles of Nurture;
- Children’s learning is understood developmentally
- The classroom offers a safe base
- The importance of nurture for the development of wellbeing
- Language is a vital means of communication
- All behaviour is a form of communication
- The importance of transition in children’s lives
Our Nurture Provision uses a therapeutic approach which offers a range of opportunities for children to engage with early nurturing experiences they may have missed resulting in attachment difficulties and development trauma. Our ultimate aim is to give students the skills and strategies they need to continue participating successfully in education.
Each day starts with a nurture breakfast, where staff model family style dining and have planned discussion topics focused on the wider world. All children have core lessons each morning as well as personalised targeted interventions including: spelling and reading.
Academic (English, Maths & Science)
Our curriculum is a bespoke curriculum carefully designed to meet the needs of a wide range of students with SEMH barriers to learning and other SEND needs. Our curriculum intends to give all learners the knowledge and skills they need in order to experience more success in their subsequent educational setting. As well as addressing gaps in learning. Adaptive teaching is used to meet the individual needs of the children in each group and have additional focus on social skills, developing confidence and also promoting independence.
