Hair and Beauty Curriculum Intent
Whilst studying Hair and Beauty at ‘The Heights’ we aim to inspire, challenge, develop and motivate each individual learner in order to prepare them for a life beyond the classroom. This is achieved by following an engaging sequence of curriculum which provides learners with knowledge rich opportunities to develop crucial life and social skills whilst giving them the freedom to establish their independence, resilience and perseverance in a creative manner. Learners will continually gain confidence throughout their time within Hair and Beauty at ‘The Heights’ and learn the importance of team work and establishing and maintaining relationships through clear communication and their passion and knowledge for their subject. This will all take place in a stimulating learning environment with highly qualified and experienced professionals who cultivate enthusiasm. This curriculum can provide a variety of opportunities for learners who wish to progress into a career within the Hair and Beauty industry either through attending college or securing an apprenticeship.
How this will be achieved:
- Teaching practical skills and theory knowledge to support this
- Scaffolding work appropriately to support individual needs
- Checking previous knowledge learnt has been retained through recall activities
- Build in regular checks for understanding during the lesson and address misconceptions quickly either whole-class or bespoke to individuals
- Regular formative assessments in a variety of formats
- Teaching key vocabulary
- Case studies and role plays to demonstrate working within a salon environment and the importance of communication and teamwork
- One-to-one support whilst working on a dolls head or peer
- In depth demonstrations of a variety of hair techniques
- Relating all activities to life within a running salon
- Trips and visits to various salons, hair events and wholesalers
- Modelling appropriate behaviour and communication within a salon environment
- Offering regular and personalised feedback
- Using effective questioning techniques to draw out thinking and creativity
- Summative assessments with Year 11
- Ensure learners take pride in their portfolios and practical work completed
- Promote a love of the Hair and Beauty industry
